The Making of the Princess Luna Dress

When the idea popped into my head to design this dress, it was, first and foremost; because I wanted one.

I feel like I’m going out on a limb here because I’m not someone who does what one could call ‘cosplay’.
It rocks, don’t get me wrong. I’ve just never done it.
That wasn’t why I made it, really.

Princess Luna is completely. totally. #spiritanimal.

At this point, you’re thinking one of two things (maybe even both):

1. Is this a kid’s show character that we’re talking about?
2. It’s the pretty hair and title as “princess”, right?

Welp; yes, and no, respectively.

The complexity in the character design is part of what has made the revamped ‘My Little Pony, Friendship is Magic’ show so popular with audiences of all ages.

The complete essence of who Luna is can be found in the comic series, the show, and the books.

In short…
She was born an ordinary unicorn. (natch)
She studied and trained her way up to alicorn status under Starswirl the Bearded’s tutelage along side her sister, Celestia.
This took literally thousands of years. (Bear with it, guys, they’re unicorns alicorns, okay?)
Luna is eventually entrusted with governing the moon and the stars; Celestia is given jurisdiction of the sun and its celestial movements (after discovering these as their respective Life’s Purposes).

After a thousand or so years of this arrangement, Luna becomes increasingly depressed at her perception that everyone loves the day and shuns the night.

She lets her sadness, jealousy, bitterness, resentment, fear, and overall negative image of herself completely consume her, turning her into the bitter spirit of Nightmare Moon.
She refuses to lower the moon and vows to keep the world in eternal darkness.

This causes Celestia (the older and technically more powerful sister) to banish her to the moon for a minimum of 1,000 years.

Luna then spends 1,000 years hand-(hoof)-making everyone’s nightmares.

She returns to earth, the negativity in her spirit is dispelled using generosity, honesty, laughter, kindness, and loyalty, with a touch of magic (the Elements of Harmony).

Racked with guilt and filled with the memories of fellowship, friendship, and love, she then vows to eternally protect and serve all who fall under her domain; the night.

What makes her relatable are the trials she faces while trying to reintegrate into society.

She’s awkward.
She’s too loud, then too quiet.
She likes to play pranks.
She’s an introvert.
She has a past.
She wants a friend.
She wants to belong.

All the while attempting to maintain her role as a public figure and being the literal ruler of the moon.

I love this. All of it.
Because I feel it!
No matter what your past is, you did not tailor-make everyone’s nightmares for 1,000 years, eh?

The Princess Luna Dress

So there you have it.
That’s why I made this dress!
I hope you love it as much as I loved making it.
